Families, friends and loved ones we\u2019re desperately seeking any form of communication that they could get from those lost within the devastation of the Tsunami.  Phone lines we\u2019re down, internet services we\u2019re down, and cell phone signals became hit and miss due to overload.<\/p>\n<p>It was a relief for some to get a short message on Facebook that they we\u2019re okay and would contact again when they could.  This gave Facebook the idea to create an app that could notify loved ones quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The new app, called Safety Check, takes note of the user\u2019s home city and in the event of an emergency, Facebook will send out a text message to those people that simply asks\u2019 \u201cAre you Okay?\u201d at that point when the person responds a \u201cyes\u201d will be instantly communicated out to loved ones via the Facebook news feed.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has shown itself this week to be a powerful force in helping man-kind with the use of social media.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook introduced a new app this week from some wonderful lessons learned a few years back when the Tsunami struck Sri Lanka and other coastal countries along the Indian Ocean.
